North American Black Walnut (Juglans nigra), native to eastern North America, is a large deciduous tree reaching 30 to 40 meters in height at maturity. Its trunk is straight and upright, with dark gray-black bark marked by deep longitudinal fissures. The heartwood ranges in chocolate brown, with a composed and elegant tone, fine and straight grain, and a tough yet resilient texture. It offers excellent workability and takes on a natural luster after polishing.

Black walnut grows slowly, with a maturation cycle of 50 to 80 years — premium large-diameter timber requires over a century — making it a scarce and high-priced resource.
